What is success?

Success is a term that is very common for us to measure our achievements in life. Ever since we were a child it seems that we are always taught to pursue success, both in personal and professional life. The definition of success itself is very diverse and is often derived from the family and social environment in general.

However, have we ever asked the definition of success for ourselves? If so, have we updated the definition regularly?

Common definition of success

In my life, I feel like I’ve been chasing “success” most of my life but have never really thought about what it means to me. Some common definitions of success such as that I used to pursue…

👉 Enroll in prestigious state schools and universities
👉 Work in big and well-known companies, get high positions and big salaries
👉 Get married and have a family before the age of thirty
👉 Achieve a specific celebrity body goal
👉 Have enough money to buy cars, land, and properties
👉 Eat out at most hip places, travel to various places in the world, watch concerts of your favorite musicians
👉 Have a large passive income, and achieve financial freedom at a certain age

And of course, I didn’t get it all.

Is this definition wrong? Well, of course not. All is well. But often we are stuck with the definition of “success” from the material side, or something that is visible. Not on the meaning of “success” itself.

Have we ever asked ourselves deeper, what exactly are we looking for if we have it all? I often ask this question to my clients. Through a fairly long exploration process, most of the time the answer goes down to this common theme “I want to feel happy, or calm and peaceful”.

So why do we go after the material, or are we hoping for the feeling that comes from obtaining those materials? The truth is, all those material objectives are one of the tools to gain experiences that can bring us closer to the feeling of happiness.

I also realized why our parents taught us to be like that, actually, it’s simple, they want us to be happy. I thank my parents who raised me the best way they know. However, in the end I also realized that more often the focus is more on how to get it with material things, not with an awareness of the meaning of happiness itself.

Redefining success

I realize that everyone wants to be happy and peaceful, and so do I. But if we realize that this is the ultimate goal, this new awareness will open our eyes to a more open goal of success, and how to get there. The next questions that follow could be…

⭐ How can we be happy today? Does our happiness have to be determined by material and external factors?
⭐ Who are the people in life who add to our happiness?
⭐ What things make us happier and more peaceful?
⭐ What life experiences make us happier?
⭐ How can we continue to grow in life’s journey and live it in peace?

Sometimes the answer can be very simple, and also more complex. I find my clients give various definitions depending on the phase of life they are facing, but full of depth.

Once we asked the right questions, we will realize that the definition of success could be something very different than our ideas. These are some examples that I get from my clients. .

❤️ Have more quality time with my children
❤️ Do hobbies that I really love
❤️ Work according to my passion and purpose
❤️ Continue to grow and develop myself
❤️ Contribute more to society
❤️ Optimum health, perform well in all aspects, do the things I love
❤️ Have a healthy relationship with my partner
❤️ Run a responsible business that has an economic impact on society
❤️ Opportunity to travel to various places that enrich my soul
❤️ Get closer to God and be more spiritual, and so on…

And of course, we can continue to update this definition at any stage of our life.

I personally define success very simple.

Thriving or success is inner-peace.

How about you? What is the definition of “success” for you?

Me and my parents 🙂

May this post serve you.

with love,
Coach Inuk ❤️
