Rest is productive

I’ve been feeling lazier than usual, I feel like taking a rest, a good one. Also, I’m in my winter phase (if you’re a woman, you know what I mean ;). It’s been quiet hectic weeks, I have several projects running at the same time, and I just kept pushing myself. No wonder, now I feel like I want to rest more, sleep, and work in slower pace.

But really.. I felt like why is it so hard to slow down, and do nothing. In the end of the day, I found myself getting busy cleaning my apartment.. oh my. Why I just couldn’t help myself?

Suddenly the feeling of guilt crept in me..

I’m fully aware that resting is so important, but the things is, I’m feeling guilty about it. My mind just won’t shut. It feels weird if I just don’t do anything. There are narratives going on in my mind saying that “doing nothing nothing is not productive”, “doing nothing means lazy” and furthermore, I feel useless.

Is that really true? Where did they come from?

Old beliefs

Once again, I learn about myself a little deeper. Through self-coaching process and a discussion with my own coach I finally understand that there are some of old beliefs that deeply installed in my subconscious and have been running my life in the background such as…

“productivity is everything”
“I’m only worthy when I create or produce something”
“life is all about hard work, and only hard work”
“doing nothing is lazy, and those who are lazy are useless”

I wonder why there were so many beliefs around working that made me feel like it’s such a shame for taking a good rest.

As expected, these beliefs came from how an where I grew up ~ the family, education and social environment. I grew up where people telling me that I needed to works so hard to get what I want in life. A hustle culture if you may say.

I honestly don’t want to blame my parents, nor my family or education, but this is the reality. I grew up where people around me working and struggling so hard to make end meets. That the output of working hard is valued so much, where without it we can’t be success and happy. And frankly speaking, I spent four years studying Management in college that taught me all about productivity based on scarcity.

I’m not saying that these beliefs are wrong, in fact on the contrary, these beliefs brought me to many successful moments in my life especially in my education and career. A good work ethic.

However, I did not see how it impacted other areas in my life..

Turned out the same beliefs are also the ones that made stress and burnout in the past. I easily forgot that there is nothing wrong with taking a break and rest.

Is this sounds familiar for you? I found many similar stories from my clients too.

I realized that taking a break or resting does not always mean laziness, but it can also mean something productive. We often forget that when we have enough rest, we will be much more productive when we work. And more importantly, I want to enjoy working in every moment when it’s time to working.

Afterall, we are human being, not human doing.

Upgrading the old beliefs

So, what can we do? Why don’t we consciously upgrade our old beliefs into something more useful. For me personally it could be..

“working is productive, so does resting”
“I choose to have a balanced lif
e”
I prioritize self-care”
“I don’t push myself too hard, I take actions from the place of alignment”

You see with this new beliefs, I know I can still enjoying working, and taking enough resting at the same time. I feel much more relaxed and calm. I’m not haunted anymore by the guilt when I decided to take a break or even a long rest. I even feel more productive, and I experience less unnecessary stress.

Life can be easy. Upgrading our beliefs can be as simple as making decisions.

How about you?

Slow down to speed up. There’s a reason the fastest racing car drivers are taught, “Go slow to go smooth. Go smooth to go fast.”
