Choosing our experience

Happy October! ❤️

I’m writing this in Surabaya (1/10) as I hosted a community meetup last night. Currently I’m experiencing what some people might call a “nightmare,”. However, I decided to experience it differently.

Let me share you my story.

I arrived in this city yesterday. It didn’t take long for me to prepare my trip as I travel more intuitively. I didn’t do much planning whatsoever. For this trip, I booked my flights and hotel just two days in advance, and that was it.

So, I chose this hotel I’m staying in simply because it is close to the venue, and the price is reasonable. It’s a medium-size hotel, kind of homey vibe, looks great on the net. However, once I got here, it didn’t take long for me to notice…

  • The bedroom air freshener is smell “too strong”, I really don’t like it. And there are some mosquitos at night, what..
  • There is a renovation / construction happening in the hotel, it’s so noisy during the day. This also makes the view not great.
  • I sneeze and cough every time I turn the AC on, I wonder what is happening..
  • I came down a bit late for breakfast this morning (it was at 9, while breakfast time is until 10), only to find all the food were almost finished and after I asked, they only refilled one menu. And don’t even ask me about the taste.
  • I could go on..

I was so disappointed with this situation. I feel like I want to scream and make a list of complaints to them. I also started to blame myself, “why didn’t I research enough, why didn’t I ask for recommendations before deciding to book a hotel?”. I was in agony.

But then, I paused..

Before I was drawn into this negative spiral, I finally could catch myself. I realized that my experience doesn’t have to be bad and sad (okay, that’s a rhyme, lol).

I reminded myself that what we experience really depends on how we experience it. Meaning, it is really up to us how we want to perceive our experience.

I can choose. It’s that simple.

So I decided to choose to experience differently. I chose to see it in a different light. Suddenly, a deep sense of gratitude washes over me.. And this is how I see it now..

  • I’m grateful for the kindness of the staff..
  • I’m thankful for the Netflix on my bedroom ~ and the TV is actually in a really decent size! You see, I don’t subscribe Netflix for personal reason, so it’s good to have it sometimes. I got to watch my favorite rom-com movie by the end of the day.
  • Once my bedroom cool enough, I turned off the AC at night and use Autan a.k.a mosquito repellant. I slept so soundly last night.. and I noticed that the bed is actually really comfy.
  • The live acoustic music in the evening. I enjoyed it a lot, even they played my requested song, Heaven by Bryan Adams.
  • I could go on..

I can’t change my external experience, but I definitely can change how I experience it internally.

And the best part, I have all the time in the world! I get to choose how I spend my day, I don’t even have to stay if I don’t want to. I take my time to read this book I’m bringing, The Untethered Soul by Michael Singer. It’s really nice to spend more time for reading..

And also here I am, writing this article at the Starbucks nearby, feeling creative and inspired.

Life is good. If we choose it to be.

So, here’s a thought for you: When life hands you lemons, choose how you make the lemonade. 🍋✨

My wish for you is that every time you find yourself feeling negative because of your external experiences, you remind yourself that you can choose how you experience them.

Have a beautiful week full of gratitude! ❤️

With love,
Coach Inuk
