Pomodoro: A Simple Productivity Hack

Last week I felt my focus was…scattered. Maybe it was the Ramadan fasting, maybe it was working from home (well, I couldn’t just go to a cafe this time). But with all those little distractions popping up everywhere – laundry, dishes, tv, my bed (lol) – it felt like my to-do list was never ending. I had so many things I wanted to get done! 😓

Then, something clicked. I remembered the Pomodoro Technique! I used to use it ages ago, and it’s one of the simplest productivity hacks! For those who might not know, the Pomodoro Technique is basically a super simple way to break your work into focused chunks. It’s like a mini-sprint for your brain!

According to Wikipedia, it was developed by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s. It uses a kitchen timer to break work into intervals, typically 25 minutes in length, separated by short breaks (typically 5 minutes). Each interval is known as a pomodoro, from the Italian word for tomato, after the tomato-shaped kitchen timer Cirillo used as a university student. 🍅

So, I decided to give it a go. And it worked wonders! Here’s how I did it:

  1. Set intention: Before each 25-minute chunk, I’d say to myself, “Okay, for the next 25 minutes, I’m fully focused on this one task.”
  2. Minimize distractions: This was key! I limited myself to a maximum of five open tabs on my computer window. No scrolling through endless feeds!

And guess what? I got so much done! I felt like I was finally in control of my time again. It was amazing how much I could accomplish with just a little bit of focused effort. In fact, I’m writing this newsletter with Pomodoro! 😁
